OTAGO SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.

Tho monthly meeting of the Otago School Commissioners was held on Tuesday. Present— Messrs J. P. Maitland (chairman), A. C, Begg, lions. AY. H. Reynolds, and Dr Menzies.

A letter was received from the Secretary of the Education Department, Wellington, notifying the appointment of Mr W. H. Pearson, of Invercavgill, as a member of the body in the room of Mr John Bathgate. Mr K. Finlayson and Sons wrote objecting to a proposed road-line through part of section 24, block IX, Invercargill Hundred.— Letter read. Mr John Valentine, of Hawksbmy, applied for reduction of rent of quarter-acre section 10, block XXV, on the ground that the land was exhausted.— Request declined. . The opinion of Messrs Sicvwright and Stout having been taken upon Mr Bcgg's motion as to paj'ment of fees to Commissioners— such opinion being to the effect that the Commissioners had no power to move n the matter— it was agreed to bring the subject under the notice of the Minister of Education, suggesting that provision should be made for payment of the Commissioners for their services. A large quantity of business of a routine and unimportant nature was also transacted. The Commissioners also agreed to draw up a supplementary report to that forwarded to Government by the Secretary, drawing particular attention to the necessity of a bill being placed before Parliament empowering them to sell certain endowments.
