LAND AND WATER

A match waa played at Palmerston on Saturday between the Palmerston and Excesior Cricket Clubs, and resulted in a victory for th 6 latter by 54 runs. The ground was very bumpy, and not favourable for large scores. Crump and Strode, with 15 and 13 respecteivly, batted well for Palmerston ; while Wheeler, S. Leith, and J. Leith— 23, 16. and 11— did well for the Excelsior. The fieldiDg on both siden was very good, considering the ground, while the long-Btopping of J. Eussell for the winning team was remarkably good. A letter was received by a gentleman in town on Tuesday from Mr G. Alexander, one of the Australian team of cricketers. The writer says: _"Aß we leave for England on 19th March, our visiting you is out of the question ; but we are very deßirous of seeing New Zealand, and are considering the question of visiting you on our return trip. If a lump sum was offered us for the New Zealand tour, you could reckon on our visit as assured, but to corns on own account requires some consideration. As regards the team it ia the same as previously published, with the exception that A. Bannerman and Jarvis have signed articles— bringing our number up to 13 ; and Garratt may yet go Jarvis is all the Adelaide people represent him, and is a great acquisition to us. We are all in fine trim, and hope to give a good account of ourselves."
