The School Committee of Southbridge have nominated Messrs Henry Clark and James Fulton for reelection as membera of the Educ.ttL.rn The appeals againht the olasnficvtion of lands in the Inch-CluUia Kiver and Road Board District were dismiesed. # The men employed on the river bank protective works, and also those at the quarry, each contributed n day's pay towards the Irish Famine Relief Fund.

The Rev. G. T. Beaumont, of Lawrence, officiated in St. 'Mark's Anglicaa Church, Balclutha, on Sunday last. The County Council intends to invite tenders for the formation of the main road from Dunedin to Invercargil near block IV., Kuriwao, at a cost not to exceed £250. Tbe County Council have voted the sum ot £100 to be expended on roads leading to the Kaihiku railway station- £75 of that amount to be charged against tho Clinton riding, and £25 against the Pomahaka riding. The Clutha County Council have resolved with regard to the balance of money belonging to roads ia connection with the deferred-pay-ment system in the Waipahi riding, that the Engineer call for tenders for the most suitable works to the extent of the funds available. The balance-sheet of the Clutha County Council showed the various ridings to be in the following financial position :- Richardson ndintr, credit balance, £691 15s 9d; Pomahaka riding, debit balance, £429 12s 6dj Wairuna ridiug, credit balance, £43 17s 3d ; Clydevale riding, debit balance, £903 L4s Id j Clinton riding, debit balance, £231 03 9d ; Sauth Molyneux riding, debit balance, £295, 4s sd ; Waipahi riding, credit balance, £482 17s 3d. A motion was brought forward in the County Council to the pffecfc that the sum of £100 be voted to tbe Clutha Road Board to assist them iv bridging the Kaihiku stream on the road known as \he Hill Foot road, one-halt to be paid by tbe Clinton riding. On account of the state o£ the finances of Rioharduon riding the motion was shelved. At the laat County Council meeting it .was resolved, " That the sum of £100 be voted to the Pomahaka Road Board, to be spent on what is known as the main district road, Te Houka ; that the County Engineer supply plans and specifications for the work, and that the money be paid to the Board after the same is passed by the Engineer " Friday's local journal IB very severe on a number of worshippers at the shrine of Bacchuß in Balclutba. In a leading article it says :— We have no hesitation in saying that the debauchery and other irregularities indulged in during the past few days (including Sunday) by a small Bection of the citizens are a disgrace to the town. . . •It seems a4if a few, with the apparent countenance of some of whom better things might be expeoted, and the help of otheis, who in a cowardly manner keep in the back-grounatomakethe balls, had determined to institute a reign of terror in our midst to the annoyance of peaceable citizens. At the last meeting of the Clutha County Council, a memorandum waß reoeived from the Government to the effect that the first instalment of the loan in connection with the repair cf tbe damage occasioned by the nooda in the early patt of 1878, was due on the 31at of December last ; end asking immediate payment of the amount— £ls7o, the whole amount of the loan beiug £7550. It was resolved, " That the Chairman write to the Government stating the case of the dispute between the Bruce and the Clutha Counties re the Balclutha bridge, and reqaest that the Government waive for a time payment of the first instalment, giving the Clutha County more time to repay the loan for the bridge.'*
