SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

(from our own correspondent.) Wellington, December 9tb. The contract fer supplying all the North Island railways with coal was secured by New Zealand 'collieries, so that only New Zealand coal will be used on these railways during the coming year. It is hoped that similar arrangements will be mads for the Middle Islaud railways. Not only are the tenders lower than Newcastle, but the coal is very much superior for steam purposes^ It will be used for smithy purposes also, This shows that coal can be worked profitably without any protective duties, and completely demolishes the protectionist proposal of Mr Reeves to put a duty of 5s per ton on imported co&l.
