DUNEDIN LABOUR REPORTS

February 12th, 1879. Mr Skenb reports: Harvest op -rations are nnvin full swiner, snd every man is at work. Ordinary works on roads, railway*, lvirbour works, &c , are all crying for men. Wages were nover so high as at prcent iv every department. Town and country shopmen and clerks are poorly paid in comparison to ordinary labourers. Hotel servants are in good demand, and trained people aie scarce. Ihe building trade keeps very active. Couples are more asked for. Men trained to buah work are much wanted. Female servants are a shade more plentiful Wages: Couples, £75 to £90 ; harvesters, 30s to 50s ; cooks, waiters, bootß, &c, 29" to 40s ; ploughmen and shepherds, £60, £65, and £70; day labour, Ba, 9a, 10s, and 11s per day; jrirls, 10s, 12s, lfis, 20s, and 30s ; milkers, 15s, 20s, and 25s ; boye, 63 to 10a.

Mrs Wilson, Octagon, reports: Good demand for first-class servants for town and country. Best general servants, 15s to 20s; ordinary, 10s to 15s; housemaids, 16s to 20s; female cooks, 20* to 408; male cooks, 40s to 60^; laundresses, 20s; barmaids, 25s to 355 ; nursagirls, 6s to 10j ; useful girls, Fs to 12s ; boots at lntels, IBs to 253 : grooms, 15s to 25s ploughmen and shepherds, 25s 1o 30s; station hands, 20s to 255 ; labourers, 8s to 9s ; married c.uples, £, o£9o.

Mossrs Caroills, Gibiss, and Co. have received tho followimr wool telegram from Messrs Helmutb, Schwnrlze, and Co., London, dated 4th hist :-''Nex< serifs will commence on the 18th. New arrivals limited to 250.C00 b^les."
