FIRE AT GISBORNE.
Gisborne, February 12. The firo has swept from the Bank of New Zealand to Adair's, inclusive, comprising the Albion Hotef; Bradley's stable?, Good's (jeweller), Nasmith's (jeweller), Dr Gorrie'f, Cooper and Griffiths' shoe-shop, and Adair'd (stationer). Finneran's cottage, next to Adair's, is also gone. A heavy shower then came on, , and a very strong wind was fortunately blowing from the south. Had the wind been northerly, there was no hope, for almost the Yfhole town would have been destroyed. The fire originated in Nasmith's or Best's*. Willing hands rescued much of the goods, but they are greatly knocked about. The brick walle of the new building for the Banlc of New Zealand stopped the progress of the flames up the street. _ The fire-engine was manned by the leading citizens, volunteers being scarce, because they were not well treated at the last fire. A line of men was engaged in passing buckets of water from tho river to the scene of the fire. Tons of property are now stored in the Government buildngs.
