BANQUET AT INVERCARGILL.

Inveroabgill, January 34th. •The Mayor and Corporation of Dnnedin this evening invited their brethren of Invercargill and the members of the Reception Committee, and other prominent gentlemen, to a banquet at the Albion Hotel. About 60 gentlemen sat down to a first-cla^s. spread, provided by Host Heywood. His Worship the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr Walter), occupied the chair, and was supported by Mr' Feldwick, M.H.R., and the Mayor_ of Invercargill. - After the loyal and patriotic toasts had been honoured, Mr IsaJao; of Dunediflj proposed " The Parliament." <

Mr Feldwick, in responding, referred in eulogistic terms to the General Assembly, and his remarks were frequently applauded. The Chairman proposed the toast of the evening— "The Mayor and Corporation of Invercargill." • He referred in very high terms to the manner in which the visitors had been treated in Invercargill, and predicted for the town- and- district a great future. He denied that there was any jealousy between Dnnedin and Invercargill. It was merely a spirit of lauiable emulation to excel.

Mr Lcmsden, the Mayor of Invercargill, responded.

Mr Goodwilme, of Invercargill, proposed " The Mayor and ' Corporation of Christchurch," coupled with the names of Messrs Wilson and Gassy of Christchurch. < Mr Wilson, in responding, made a lengthy speech, laudatory of Invercargill and the district. He predicted a glorious future for the town consequent upon the fertile nature of its lands. Invercargill compared favourably with Chrintchuroh, and would yet be one of the first towns in the Colony.
