The distress in England and Scotlaud is owing almost to the complete stagnation of trade in the iron, coal, and manufacturing district?. The distress in Sheffield ia almost unparalleled ; and gloomy accounts are received from Manchester, Birmingham, Wigan, Wolverhampton, Liverpool, Plymouth, Bristcl, Dundee, and Glasgow. The Preston Pottery Districts Relit f Committee formed is unable to cops with the calamity. The Indian Council have decided to increase the army by 15,000. The interest in the forthcoming Exhibitions is very great, and Colonial topics are receiving much attention. Lord Beaconsfield, replying to a deputation from California, declared that the Berlin Treaty ensured the pacification of Europe. Respecting Cyprus, he stated that every condition on account of which it was occupied was entirely fulfilled. The harbour of Famagosta is to be improved to accommodate the entire Mediterranean fleet. Intense sympathy with the Queen ii felt in regard to the death of Princess Alice. ! Lord Beaoonsfield, in moving an addres3 of condolence, said the death of the Princegs W*s wonderfully piteous, ■
