DOMESTIC PRODUCE.

Witness Ofp tee, Wednesday, January 29. Baiiley. — We hear of no transactions. Good malting is worth G3 in Melbourne, and feeding descriptions are selling at 4s Gd to 4s 9d. Daiuy Produce. — The market for butter is slightly firmer. Strictly choice dairy butter is worth Is per lb. , and letails at Is 2d. Ordinary fresh butter brings 9d. Cheese ia, if anything, a degree easier; gtocei'3 are paying 7d to 7|d for small lots. Fruit. — There is now a full market, and wholesale prices have undergone a reduction. Apples are worth Gs to lls per case : pears, 8s to 10s per half case ; plums, Gs to 9s per Jialf case ; oranges are 253 per case, and very scarce j apricots, lOd per lb. Pisn.— The market is moderately well supplied. Fresh Meat. — All kinds, of the best quality, are iv good supply, except pork, for which butchers aie pitying 5d to Gd. The top figure for good country brands, in Melbourne ab the latest accounts was £10 15 a. ;^ Oats.— This grain ha? sold at a little lower range, quotations being 3s 7d to 3s 9d. New crop will begin to come in in a, week or two. It if believed that crops throughout Otago will yield, on the whole, a fair average. Where they are good they are very fine, but are poor where sown whoa the ground was wet. Victorian aie q noted in Melbourne at 03 3d to 4s Bd, and New Zealand at 4s 3d to 4s 9d. Prime milling are worth a littlo more. Onions. — No change ha 3 taken placo during thfl week. Potatoes.— Supplies arc corning in from all quarters, and prices have dtclinrd. We quote at 5^ lOd to Gs lOd per cwt. Kidneys of fine quality aro coming in from Blueskin and tli9 l'eniusula. Poultry.— Young fowls are now coming in. Poult'-rcrs are paying 4s Gd to 5s per couple ; for hens, 33 Gd to 4s, aud for ducks 5s to 6. VnciEi'AULBS. — All kinds are abundant. Green I ppas are lower. Vegetable marrows retail at Gil to Is each. Cabbages miy be had at Is to Is Gd per dozen. WnEAT. — Wo hear of no sales of account ia this market. Quotations remain unaltered, both here and in Australia. It will be seen by the following from tho Mark Lino Express of December 17th, that tho future course of prices in England will depend greatly upon America : — "Millers aro not disposed to increase their stocks ; but independently of this, the commercial atmosphere ,of the country is clouded by the ruinous state of trade in the manufacturing districts and the distrust occasioned by heavy liabilities in financial circles. Shipments from St. Petersburg being practically ended, aad California supplies still in the distance, the attention of the trade will centre upon the action of the Atlantic States, upon whose judicious management of their large resources tho future course of prices in this country will chiefly depend. It must be admitted that, independently of possible political contingencies, any marked advance in the price of wheat is difficult to foresee, especially as there is so little unemployed capital in the country available for speculative purposes. But, oa the other haud, tho probability of a severe winter is a strong ally on the side of holders, which justifies their abstoution from pressing sales at the moment, and may raiso value's a few shillings per quarter at no distant day." Wool. — Nothing of significance ia to be noted as regards tho local market. Prces realised at tho late weekly sales in Melbourne are very satisfactory, considering the state of the Home wool trade.
