It may not be too early to remind owners that on Saturday next, February lsb, nominations close for the following races at the Dunedin Annual Meeting :— Handicap Hurdle Eace, of 80 soya ; Novel Handicap, of 80 soys ; Forbury Handicap, of 200 soys ; Sbeeplechase Handicap, of 100 soys ; and Flying Handicap, of 100 soys. Debails of the annual races ab Sb. Bathans show that bad weather was experienced, and that the meeting was consequently not an unqualified success. On the first day Mr Jones's Larrikin won the Maiden Plate, beating Frisk, Rufus, and Charlie. The St. Ba'hans Handicap fell to Mr T. Keenan's Wild Manx Boy (LOst 101b), Hector (Bst 41b) being second, Larrikin (9st 51b) third, Rufus and Maggie unplaced. Mr Jones's Little Nell appropriated the Selling ' Race, and Mr Allan's Jack the Hack Race. On the second day Wild Manx Boy (list), beat Larrikin (8-t), and Charlie (6sb 121b) in the Flying Handicap. From want of entries the Cambrian Stakes fell through.; but a trotting race was substituted, and this was won by Mr Harley's Nobby. The Consolation Handicap, won by Mr Mallon's Charlie, concluded the proceedings. At the Palmerston. Meeting, fixed for March 7th, £275 will be given in stakes, and as there will be only one day's rices the events are rich enough to command numerous entries. They are the Maiden Plate, of 30 soys 5 Palmerston Cup, of 100 eovs ; Novel Handicap, of 50 soys j Shag Vall9y Handicap, of 40 soys; District Selling Race, of 20 aovs ; Consolation Handicap, of 20 sovsj and Hack Race, of 10 soys. Entries for the Handicap close oa February 24th. The Queenstown races on Friday and Saturday last wore favoured wibh beautiful weather, and bhe various events were well conbesbed. On bhe first day Mr Cash's Medora won bhe Maiden Plate of 15 soya from two others. The Frankton Handicap of 35 soys was carried off by Mr Taylor's Haricob (9sb 51b), beating Speculation (9st), Patch (Bst9lb), Curacoao (7stl2lb), Devonshire Lass (7st 121b), and Flying Beauty (7st 61b). Mr Taohy's Port Philip Buck secured the District Race of 15 soys, beating three others. The Wakatipu Handicap was won by Mr Tuohy's Timbertop, beating Devonshire Lass and Tommy Dodd. On the second day Tambourini won the Hurdle Handicap of 25 soys, and Aminadab took the Novel Handicap of 30 soys. Haricot then gained anobher in the Jockey Club Handicap of 40 soys, Foam running second. The results of bhe two small races and of the Consolation Stakes have not reached us. There is a lull in the betting market on the Dunedin Cup, and transactions have during the week been unimportant. With so large a num her of bookmakers as now do business on the big race of the colony there are certain to be slight discrepancies in bhe price of horses — what one man will lay may nob suit the book of another layer— but bhe following will be found to be the average quobations :—: —

Things are quiet at the Forbury, and are likely to be so until after the Wellington races, for until then few northern horses will be down. The Dunedin candidates for our meeting are thus the only ones in work here, and as their doings are scarcely of interest yet, and they themselves are too well known to require description, I have not yet found my way out to the training ground. In a week or two's time, however, something may be doing that will be worth chronicling. " The Druid " reports that old Magenta, who once fetched 600 guineas as a racer, is now used as a butcher's hack in Christchurch, and would probably nob now command £15. According to a Wellingbon paper, Pinfire has been scrabched for the Wellingbon Cup. Emulatimg the example Bet by bhe Greymoubh Jockey Club, Hokitika is to have a racemeeting on March 17. Steps are at all events being taken to carry out the project, and it promises to prove a great success. General entries for the Wellington Racing Club's annual meeting close on Monday nexb, the 27th inst., including acceptances for the Derby, and the final acceptances for the Cup. The Canterbury great aubumn Handicap of 300 soys closes on the sbh prox. Volume VI of the New Zealand Stud Book ha* been issued, and this useful work will doubtless be warmly welcomed by turfites, and those interested in the breeding of blood stock. Mr P. Butler seema never to tire of buying race-horses, his latest purchase being Laertes, who fell to his nod at 450 guineas, at the sale of the late Mr J Gilligan's horses. Javelin was bought by Mr Delamain for 300 guineas, but this waß probably for a Hawkes Bay speculator, for I noticed that bhe handsome black has returned to Napier. Jangler was offered at auction at Christchurch last week, but was passed in at 450 guineas. Acceptances for the Marlborough Cup of 100 soys, and general entries for the other races at the same meeting, close on the Bth prox. In the far north, acceptances are due on the Ist prox. for the Napier Handicap of 150 soys. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club haa taken a fourteen yeara' lease of 80 aores of land on whioh to lay out a course, and this is to be done aud a grana stand costing £700 tp be erected by

the March races. The Club has also resolved to expunge its old rules aud to adopt tho New Zealand racing rules. The Hawke's Ba,y Racing Club, tho vigorous young opponent of the abovo mentioned body, has issued its full programme for March 17th, and it reads as foUows :— Hurdle Handicap of 100 soys ; Hack Hurdle Race of 15 sovsj; Inauguration Stakes of 40 soys ; Hawke's Bay Cup of 250 soys ; Maiden Plito of 50 soys ; District Plate of 00 soys ; and Consolation Handicap of 30 soys. Entries for bhe Cup and Hurdle Race close on February Bth. For bhe Wanganui Jockov Club Handicap of 300 soys, and the Flying Handicap of 50 soys, nominations aro due on the 4th prox. Weights will be declared on the 26th. Beacon.
