" We are indebted to Mr Arthm Beverly for the following answer .— " Supposing the first /8 due # six months from date, and interest converted into principal half yearly, the present value is 11/5. But if the interest is supposed to be capitalised annually, which is the practise in the Colonies, then the present value is 11/6^. When no mention is made of the terms at which interest is capitalised, it is generally understood to be annually." SHANDY GAFF.— To make egg-nog, beat to a froth the yolks of six egga with one halfpound of sugar. Add to the mixture half a pint of good brandy or whisky to cook the eggs. Then add the whites which|have been well beaten, and lastly three pints of rich milk or whipped cream. \y. F.— We see it stated that if milk is cooled down to 60° immediately after it is taken from the cow it will keep perfectly sweet for a long time, even in the hottest weather. This can be done by putting the milk dish containing the milk into cold water, and slowly stirring it until cool. Care must be taken to stir gently when cooling the milk.
