. qp, At a meeting oE the University Council on Wednesday, Mr Batiigate moved the following motion :— " The Council having already appointed a Professor of Mental aad Moral Philosophy and Political Economy at the request of the Trustees under the " Presbyterian Church of Otago Lands Act, 186G," by whom the Professor was nominated, and further being advised by the Professorial Board that the arrangements for teaching these branches are sufficient, consider it inexpedient to appoint a se cond Professor to teach the same subjects in the University, and they accordingly respectfully decline the proposal now made by the Synod." Mr Harris seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Ifc having been arranged that the Clerk of the Synod (Mr Bannerman) should be informed of the result of the Council's delibera. tions that evening, the Council adjourned,
