A second meeting of promoters of the Roslyn Tram Company was held on the 17ft. when a report from the Committee appointed at the previous meeting was submitted and approved. The line of route decided upon starts from Maclaggan street, opposite the Shamrock Hotel; from thence proceeds up Rattray street, crosses the Town Belt on the line of Rattray street to its intersection with the district road, beyond the old toll-gate; from thence it turns to the right, and proceeds along the main road to the Kaikorai Valley, stopping meantime opposite the church. A cross-line will also be made along the road from Bishopscourt on the north to the top of Rosa street on the south. A committee was ap pointed to prepare articles of association, &c, and issue prospectus. The nominal capital was fixed at L 50,000, in 10,000 Bhares of L 5 each, of which it is not intended to call up more than 30s per share. The shares have been fixed at this low sum in order to put them within the reach, of all clashes. It is estimated that the work can be completed for L 17,000. The shareholders of the Shbtover Terrace Gold-mining Company (Limited) met n Monday afternoon in Union Chambers, Princeß street, to consider the position of the company. Mr William Barron occupied the chair. Eleven shareholders attended in person, and 24 were represented by proxies. A statement of the company's present position, and of the matters which had occurred since 1875, was presented by Mr Hawkins. The meeting bad been called (1) to' consider the position of affairs ; (2) to consider a proposal to sell the assets of the company ; and (3) to consider a proposal for winding up the company. On the motion, of Mr Turnbull, seconded by Mr Eliott, the secretary was instructed to summon defaulting shareholders for the recovery of calls. On the motion of Mr Hodgkins, seconded by the Hon. W. H. Reynolds, it was resolved to take steps to wind up the company. We understand that a meeting of th« Truitepe of the Dunndin Savings Bank was held on Tuesday afternoon, when the balance-sheet was presented, showing that the profits to the 31st; December last amounted to L 12,65 519' 4d. Of this sum it was resolved, after obtaining the sanction of the Governor in Council, in terms of the Act recently passed, to hand over to the Benevolent Institution L 7515. Whilst the receipt of thifl amount must prove most acceptable to the Committee of the Benevolent Institution, it must also be a source of gratification to the Trustees of the Bank to find themselves in a position to be able to afford such substantial assistance to an institution that renders important service to so targe a portion of the community. We congratulate them on the Buoceea of the Bank, and trust it- may continue to prosper, and thus be able in due time to

render f urtaei help either to the Benevolent or some kindred institution. The monthly meeting of the Otago School Commissioners was held on Monday afternoon, in the Education Office. There were pre«ent : Messrs J. P. Maitland (chairman), J. Bathgate, D. Reid, and the Hons. 0. A.R. Menzies and W. H. Reynolds. The business gone through was of a formal character, comprising the consent to the assignment of certain leases, the passing of accounts, and the authorisation of certain reserves in the Wyudham district. The Board adjourned until the second Tuesday in February. A meeting was held on Saturday afternoon last at the University buildings, at which were present hia Worship the Mayor, the Works Committee of the City Council, and deputatations from the University (Jouncil and from the Harbour Board. The object of the meeting was to consider the proposal which has tor some time been before the public, to turn the course of the Water-of-Leith stream 1 , giving it nearly a straight direction from the bridge on the Main .North road, near Marshall and Copeland's, into Pelichet Bay. After discussion, it was decided that the City Engineer.and the Engineer, to the Harbour Board should confer and report at an early date as to the best mode of carrying out the scheme, and its probable cost, At a meeting of the Borough Council of the North-East Valley last evening, after a conference with Mr David Proudtcot, the agreement with him, for the construction of the tramway to the North-East Valley, was signed by the Mayor and Councillors. The tramways now taken in hand by Mr Proudfoot will ex tend from the North-East Valley to Caveraham, a distance of 5f miles, and from the Valley to the Ocean Beach, 5^ miles. The North-East Valley tramway will commence at the Town Belt beyond the Water-uf-Leith, and will extend to about half a mile beyond Brown's Junction Hotel on the lower road. The Hibernian- Australasian Catholic Benefit Society held its annual district meeting last week, when the following officers were duly elected and installed :— District President, Edward Carroll; District ' Vice-president, Robert Carroll ; District Treasurer, M. Connellan; District Secretary, Nicolas O'Riley; and Auditors, John Galagher and John Harris. _________
