Auckland, January 15th. The Star says there appears to be a gang of Bkilful scoundrels at work in Auckland, watching every opportunity to rob the coffers of tradesmen and hotel-keepers. Twenty-four sovereigns were abstracted from a box in the bedroom of one hotel, but no clue has been found to lead to the conviction of the offenders. A wife-beater, named Thomas Lukes Webb, at the Whau, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment, and bound over to keep the peace. He suspected infidelity. The prosecutrix' face was a dreadful spectacle. She bears an excellent character. A boatman named Pool fell over the Russell wharf in the dark, but was gallantly rescued by Constable M'Govern.
