WELLINGTON.
Wellington, January 16th. On information from Christchurch the police, at' about midday, arrested a young man named Edward Bastings, late statiorimaster at Waihola; for uttering a forged cheque for L 7 53, purporting to be signed by the General Manager of Railways, to one Henry Allen, a publican at Christchurch. January 19th. A young woman named Lucy Hickey, 18 years of age, was arrested for abducting two girls— sisters — under 13 for limmoralpurposes. The magistrate - dismissed the charge, giving, however, some good advice to all parties concerned. A small house occupied by a person named Dodsworth, and situated in Courtney place, was partially gutted by afire early this morning. The fire was confined to the bakehouse. The damage done was slight. The premises were insured in the New Zealand Insurance for Ll5O. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a candle which had been left lighted falling against some woodwork. A cottage occupied by a brickmaker named Cooper at Earori was burned last night by the bursting of a kerosene lamp. The house was not insured. A seaman on board the Manawatu, named John Davis, has been arrested on a charge of neglecting to support his family at Lyttelton. He offered to pay LI a week, but the .Magistrate adjourned the case for further 'information. \
