Towards sunset, when the hour of driving the cattle home had arrived, Jamie was lingering by a dyke side, planning an excuse for the Iractured limb of the unfortunate slot. "I'll say," lie soliloquised, "that he was loupin' a stank an' fell an' broke his leg. Na ! that winna tell ! I'll say that the brown stallion gied him a kick and did ib. That winna tell either ! I'll say that tho park yett fell upon't. Na ! that winna tell ! I'll aay —I'll s.ay-^what will I say ? Oil, I'll say that I fluug,ri stave ai.' did it ! Tin I'll tell !" "Ay, ay, Jamie," cried ""she Ju>d, Mho had been an unseen listener to this soliloquy; i " a y» a Y> Jamie, the truth aye teJJe best !"
