M'Donnell played in fine form for his 31, and M'Kinnon also hit well for 26 ; but when Tennent, who went in fifth, was joined by Kendall, the last man, the two batsmen completely collared the bowling, which tbey hit to all parts of the field. At the close of the day's play, both men c wried out their bats— Tennent for 75, and Kendall for 54. The Canterbury bowling during the latter part of the innings wag not up to the mark. The fielding, with one or two exceptions, was good. MELBOURNE CO.- SECOND INNINGS. The Melbourne team won the match by 169 runs. CANTERBURY v. SOUTH MELBOURNE. Melbournb, January 10th The third match of the tour commenced to-day. Canterbury went first to the wickets, and at lunchtime had three n>en out for t>'> runs. Ollivier and Watson again played well and there was promise of a good score On resuming Cooper got rid of the remainder very speedily, and the innings came to an abrupt close for the poor total of 90. Cooper and Major bowlid all through, the former securing eight wickets and the latter two. South Melbourne then went in and gavo a grand display of batting. The Canterbury men were completely over-matched, and the scoring was terrific. The bowling was changed repeatedly, but Woolf, Baker, and Major — particularly the two last— treated it with contempt. The score is now 226 for live wickets, and a one-innings' defeat is almost certain. Ashby got two wickets for 66, Lee one for 43, Fuller two for 23. Tho Melbourne wickets do not at all suit Ashby, and the elder Frith is ail at sea. Melbourne, January 11th. The match was continued at mid-day, and the remaining South Melbourne men gave a lot of trouble before they were disposed of. Major added 13, and was then clean bowled by Ashby ; but no efforts could get rid of English, who carried his bat for 41. Nettle, the Ballarat player, also got into double figures, and altogether the last five wickets put on 91 runs, making the huge total of 317. The wicket again played fast and true, and, as before, the bowling proved itself too weak for the batting strength opposed to it. The Canterbury men agaiu went to the wickets, hoping at least to make a draw of the match, and at one time, when Ashby and Baker were together, there were hopes that their batting would assert itself at last. Unfortunately Baker was run out when well set, and the next five men did hardly anything. Ashby rapidly knocked up 33, but had it not been for the determined stand made by Fowler and O. Frith the innings would have fallen short of 100. They pulled the score up from 97 to 130, and then Frith was caught off Major's bowling. Fuller added two, aud the innings closing for 134 left the South Melbourne victors by an innings and 93 runs. The fielding of the local team was excellent, and their bowling firstclass. The prodigious scoring against the Canterbury Eleven has deprived the matches of almost all interest, and it is expected that East Melbourne will have even an easier victory. EAST MELBOURNE. Melboorne, January 13fch. East Melbourne gathered a very strong batting team together to meet the Canterbury Sleven, but, with the exceptioa of Boyle, it i 9 weak in bowling, and the visitors have had a day out at last. The home team went in first, and, as usual, the batting was too much for the bowling. Lee was the only one who came off, and he got nearly all the best wickets. At one time nine men were out for 145, but Dobson and Trapp made a stand and brought the score to 188. The batting display was first-class. The fielding on this occasion was in something like the old form, and to dismiss East MclTjourne for the above total was a good performance. • Canterbury, on taking up the batting, as in most of their matches, started well, and for some time the Bcoring was very free. _ Boyle did not come off, and to separate Ollivier and Neilson the bowling had to be repeatedly changed. Horan eventually bowled the slogger. Neilaon and Ashby then gave a lot of trouble, fend AUee went on with slows, which proved Watal to the Canterbury captain ; he played a Capital innings of 48. Ashby was caught off Paßßfield, a medium round-arm bowler ; and <*ampbell disposed of Fowler, but "not before W. Frith had slogged up 34 by vigorous Mtting, like Kendall in the M.C.C. match. "There are still four wickets to fall, and, with the score at 182, Canterbury's prospects look very bright, provided the match is not drawn. The batting was much applauded, and deserved it. No less than six bowlers were tried, and all vitb. indifferent auccess. The match will be continued to-naorrow, but nnleßS the E.M.C.C. are disposed of for a small score it can hardly be finished.
