CHESS IN NEW ZEALAND.

We are glad to see that the interest in Chess is becoming more wide-spread throughout the colony. Through theinterestarousedby the plucky players of the Kumara digging township, challenging the players of Hokitika and Greymouth to single;] combat over the chequered field, a club has already been started at Greymouth, •which promises to be "able in a short time to hold a very respectable position. The Greymouth players accepted the friendly challenge, and a match came off on the 4th inst., at Graymouth, between six players of the Kumara district and a like number of the Greymouth players. After being hospitably entertained by then* Greymouth friends, play was commenced iv right earnest, and the result proved that the Kumara champions had not overestimated their powers. As the score stood, Kumara won five games, and Greymouth one. In justice to the Greymouth players, it is but right to state thatTa few of their best players were not in the team, and the Kumara team had the advantage of having on their side Messrs Janion and Cros^, who were for a long time members of the Dunedin Chess Club, and stood in the very first rank. It is in contemplation to have a return match in a few weeks hence at Kumara, and possibly by that time tilts Greymouth team may be strengthened, and the result very different. We shall he glad to receivo a few of the noteworthy games, for publication in our columns. A Club has also been recently started in Naseby, one of the Otago digging townships. A Chess and Draught Club was formed on the 7th March, 1878, in the country district of Dunsandel, Canterbury. They have all our hearty wishes.
