PROSPECTING.
A prospecting company haa been formed for the purpose of exploring the Soundß to the southward (says the Hokitika Star). It conBist of ten subscribing and two working shareholders, Messrs Turnley and Smith. They have already splendid specimens of white marble of a very fine quality, and have also discovered minerals of various kinds. They believe that there are large deposits of copper in those parts, and that metal is one of the chief objects of their search. Jimmy Teer, one of the castaways when the General Grant was wrecked at the Auckland Islands, goes with the party. They take two boats, tents, and provisions, and intend to make a permanent camp for headquarters, and have lighter tents for field work when out. They are provisioned for six months, and have a full supply of tools, powder, &c There is a fiord there tabooed by the Maoris here, and said to be inhabited by a savage and cannibal race, and this is the locality that the enterprising party first intend to prospect. They will thereby practically, and we hope not unpleasantly, ascertain the truth or falsehood of the tradition. We sincerely wish them every success, which we may say they are sanguine of obtaining, for their plnck in the undertaking deserves to be amply rewarded.
