The announcement of -the death in London on the4thiust. of Dr Buchanan will be received 1 with deep and heartfelt regret by his numerous f dends throughout the Colony,. as well as by the public in whose service he laboured'as ,a legislator for many years. It' may, perhaps, be some little consolation to his children, relatives, and numerous friends, to.know the high respect and esteem entertained for him thrdughout'the Colony,, as is evidenced by the fact -that,' although he ceased being a member of the Legislative Council, that body, out Jof, respect for his memory, adjourned yesterday afternoon upon receipt of the tiding 3of his, death. Dr Buchanan practised about 30 years! in London, and came to Auckland, New Zealand, for the benefit of his health "about 21 years ago. Tn 1860, he came to Otago, 'and, in 1861, waa ' appointed a member of the Legislative ' Council. He remained a member of the House until his departure for Europe in 1874.'- In England, -he took a warm interest in Colonial matters,- having been a frequent speaker at the Colonial Institute.
