A verdict of Not Guilty was returned. rThe Ploughing Match at Papakaio yesterday excited great interest, owing to the hatch for £20 between Allan and Clydesdale, local cracks. The result was— White (Taieri) first, Allan second. Rich third, and Clydesdale fourth.

At • meeting of the Central Railway Committee, held last night, it was resolved that the Committee place themselves in communication with the leading bodies on the south coast, bo as to secure the cooperation of Invercargill and Riverton, and others Interested, to have the line of railway completed at one from Kingston to Cromwell, as described in Mr Blair's report Instead of this line only opening up four thousand acres of land, as described in the report, it would open up forty thousand, while it would make the immense timber supplies of Southland available to all the northern and north-western % oldfields ; the benefits of which would warrant the immediate construction of this line, which is only fifty miles in length, passing through Crown lands all the way, and at easy gradients.
