MECHANIC— The best work published, of the kind you require, is " Knight's American Mechanical Dictionary." It is in three large volumes, and describes the tools', machinery, &c. , used in every art. It also gives an account of .the processes and histories of the arts themselves. _ There are 7,500 engravings. An English edition is now appearing. W. J.M. — The earliest mode of writing was on bricks, tilea, oyster shells, stones, ivory, bark and leaves of trees; and from the latter, "leaves of books" is probably derived. Copper and brass plates were early in use, and a bill of feoffment on copper was some years since discovered in India, bearing date one hundred years B. 0. Leather was also used, as well as wooden tablets. Then the papyrus came into vogue, and about the Eighth century the papyrus was superseded by parchment. Paper, however, is of great antiquity, especially among the Chinese ; but the first paper-mill in England was built in 1586, by a German, at Dartford in Kent.
