FIRE IN GEORGE STREET.

Afire broke out early on Monday morning in George street, between Moray place and St. Andrew street, in a tobacconist's next the Little Dust Pan toy shop. The fire bell.rang out the warning, and ' in about seven minutes the Brigade had two streams of water playing on the burning premises. By that time,-how^ ever, the flames had attacked the two-storsy house on the south side, and it too was spou in a, blaze. The exertions of' the firemen, aidedby the strong pressure of water," had the effect of reducing the volume of flame, _and in a short time the fire was under command "and ex languished, but net before the premises were nearly completely destroyed. ..Some attempts at salvage from the windows and doors of the adjoining 1 premises were made, but these were slight. The.Bendigo Pawnshop tothe north was saved, though the shutters were on fire; Messrs Baker and Summers were insured in the Standard office for L2OO on the tobacconist stock and LIOO on the lithographic plant Their loss they estimate at L3SQ. Mr Baker left the premises at 11 o'clock, when everythin" appeared in their usual condition.
