THE ATHENAEUM.

The usual monthly meeting of the Com- ' mittee of the Dunedin Athenaeum and*' Mechanics' Institute was held on' Monday.' * Present— Messrs Denniston (chairman), Blair; A. Macarthur, Lubecki, Chapman, ■ Logan, . D, : Brown, and Dick (Secretary). , „ v The Rev. Dr Roseby forwarded his resignation, which was acepted with regret.' It was also decided that, as Mr Montgomery was next* " on the list, tha,t he should fill the place ran- - dered vacant by the resignation of the Rev, Dr : Roseby. An anonymous letter in the handr * writing of a lady, and complaining of ladies < being excluded from access to the newspapers, was breught under the notice of the* meeting, but no notice was taken of it on account of its being unaccompanied by the real name of- the >: writer. It was resolved that Mr Bright's Com- <s mittes should be recognised as tenants of the large hall for two months from the present time. > A number of accounts were then passed for ; payment. Mr Macarthur brought under, the ■ notice of the meeting the fact that pictures" were sometimes cut out of the illustrated papers > r in the reading-room. He had been informed by Mr Black that this was probably done on Sun- ,> days, in consequence of the want of supervision -" on those days. The matter was referred tbith'e' I Secretary to enquire and report. It was decided^ to let the three upper rooms of ,the building to bt. Paul's Committee at an annual rental' of LSO per annum.
