CHURCH OF ENGLAND YOUNG MEN'S SOCIETY.
A meeting of persons interested* in the s for?t mation of a Church of England Youngi Men's * Society in Dunedin, was held attSt.l Paul's Schoolhouse last Monday. 'The Eight, Ker. Bishop Nevill presided, and about 'so persdna" were present. ••■'> '"' ; ■ " ""•' '>'*• ■- '- The Chaibman spoke at considerable length ; in favour of the proposed Young. Men's Asso^ 1 ciation, for two reasons — Ist; on behalf of. the young men themselves ; andj 2nd, on behalf- "of . the Church with which it is proposed tbia Associalion shall be definitely connected. : -Rooms'! had already been engaged in a central positional so that the Association might have its local * habitation. , . On the motion of the Rev. C.J. Byng,* seconded by Mr R. T. Wheeleb, if was unani-* 1 mously resolved — " That the object- of tha Society shall be to unite the members" of^tha^ Church in Dunedin, and especially young m^'f for purposes of social and intellectual intOT^"' course and recreation, and to afford a' welcome ' to new-comers." ' J " v \ ' , On the motion of the Rev. R.-L. Stanford,' ' seconded by Mr Wathen, it was reaolved— ) "That there shall be a President, .two j'Vice-'-Presidents, an Honorary Secretary, and a' Treasurer, with a Board of Management of five _ members, to arrange the affairs of the Society, I THE NAME OF THE SOCIETY. '. " J '"" Mr Wathen moved the following resolution,' which wa3 seconded by the Yen. ArchdeaconEdwakds: — "That the name ot the proposed Association shall be ' The Church of .England > Young Men's Society.' " ' ''"•', i Several amendments were proposed and rejected, and a long discussion took place on' the : subject. -■i • ■ - ; ' i • Bishop Nevill declined to put the motion, on the ground that the General Synod having ' defined the Church as the Church in the Pror, vince of New Zealand, it would be an act , of ' schism to have anything to do officially with' au . association called the Church of England Young' Men's Society. . f . ' ; -.-> , On the motion of Mr Ashoeoft, the Bishop 1 consented- to vacate the chair. . ,iT The Rev. R. L. Stanford was appointed interim, Chairman. '■' l - ! The motion— " That the Association be called * the Church of England Young Men's Society " * — waa again proposed. ' Mr S. McCarthy, sen., seconded the motion, which was carried by a large majority. It was unanimously resolved — " That, in order to give Bishop Nevill an opportunity ofobtaining advice from competent authorities, as to whether legal or conscientious objectionsare tenable as against the name Church of England Young Men's Society, the meeting adjourn \ . till Friday, the 24th inst," ' !
