CAVERSHAM COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Caversham Municipal Council was held in the Schoolhouse on the 2ndinst. Prt sent— The Mayor, Mr E. Rutherford (in the chair), Messrs Bridgman, Bennett, Proudfoot, Bum, Calder, Greig, U'Ren, and Wilson.

SPECIAL RATE.

The Mayor explained that the meeting had been called for the purpose of discussing the question of levying a special rate of threepence in the £1, to provide interest and sinking fund on the debt of LIOOO taken over from the Road Board by the Council. He moved that the rate be struck.

Mr Bridgman seconded the motion, which was carried.

MINUIES.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

DIVISION OF THE BOROUGH,

The Mayor said that the petition prpying that the Borough might be divided into Wards had been forwarded to the Hon. D. Reid and the member for the district.

ENDOWMENT.

The petition with reference to the endowment of land for the Municipality was laid upon the table for signature by the Councillors.

REPORTS.

The Mayor's Committee recommended that the Health Officer should report fortnightly npon the health of the Bcrough, and that the Inspector should be requested to report as to the cost of making a recess 60 feet back from the Forbury road, and a shoot from such recess to the quarry. The Inspector reported that the cost of forming the recess and shoot would be about LIOO. The report of the Mayor's Commitcee was adopted.

The Finance Committee reported on the estimated income and expenditure for the current year as follows :--Expenditure— Water,Ll47s ; official expenses, lA3Q j total, L 1565. Income —Dog tax, L 10 0: licenses, L 11 5; rates, L 675 : Government subsidy, L 67 8; total, L 1565. The Committee recommended that the Mayor and Chairman of the Finance Committee should be authorised to sign cheques on behalf of the Council, and that the officers should be required to find security— the Collector, L3QO, and the Clerk, LIOO, . The report was adopted. The Works Committee recommended that the proposed alteration to Clark street and Catherine street should be considered when the season is further advanced j that Mp J, Anderson should be written to, and requested to take aoticn, and have the street at the Manso widened to its full width ; thai; the consideration of Messrs Smith and Fotheringham's letter should be deferred until Councillor U'Ren is present ; and that the Inspector should be instructed to report fortnightly to the Council as to the works in progress and the number of man employed, The report was adopted.

TENDERS.

The tender of Andrew Boyea, at 2 per cent, for the collection of the rates and dog tax, vtaa accepted.

The tenders ?or the office of Poundkeeper' were referred to the Mayor's Committee, with' power to act. It Wivs resolved— "That Messrs , Smith' and Fotheringham's offer with reference to the metal for crossings be accepted."

CORRESPONDENCE.

A letter from the St. Kilda Council, asking permission to cut a drain on the Forbury road, from the Bay View road to the Ocean Beach, was referred to the Works Committee to report.

The South Dunedin Council enquired if the Caversham Council would be willing to have the culvert opposite Naumann'a Hotftl, on the Hillend road, raised and widened, each Council to bear half the expense. — Referred to a special Committee, consisting of Messrs Bridgman, Calder, and U'Ren, to cairy out. ■ Mr Timothy Hayes, ot the Kensington Hotel, wrete asking that the road and pathway near his property should be improved. ' The Mayor remarked that Mr Hayes was encroaching upon the road line, which could have been widened for hundreds of pounds only for opposition given by Mr Hayes, whereas the work would eventually cost thousands of pounds. The Clerk was instrusted to write to Mr Hayes, informing him of the conditions upon which the Council would form the footpath near his premises. The Council rose at 9.30 p.m.
