MISSIONARY MEETING.
A missionary meeting was held in the Congregational Church on Wednesday. The Rev. : Dr Roseby presided, and there was a good attendance. Divine ' service having been observed, The Chairman delivered an introductory address, in the course of which he referred to the grand catholicity of the London Missionary Society. The Rev. Mr Maxwell moved—" That this meeting, recognising tne great value and importance of missions to the heathen, offers a hearty welcome to the Rev. James Chalmers, of Raratonga, as &n agent' of one of the great Missionary Socities, and wishes for himself and Mrs Chalmers abundant prosperity in the new field of labour on which they arc -presently entering." He had met Mr and Mrs Chalmers m Sydney, when they were first on their way to Raratonga, where they had proved themselves as excellent missionaries of the Cross of Jesus Christ. ' The Rev. Dr Stuart, in seconding the motion, referred to the claims of the London Missionary Society. Missionaries had brought noble contributions to the altar of Christ, and noble contributions to science. The motion was carried unanimously. The Rev. J. Chalmebs moved—" That this meeting acknowledges the Bpecial claim upon our support of those parts of the mission field which lie near at hand, and in particular of New Guinea." The reverend gentleman gave an account of his eleven yeais' experience of Raratonga and New Guinea. » > The Rev. Professor Salmond seconded the motion, which was supported by the Rev. John Gow, and carried unanimously. - I The ' Rev. MtMenziks moved— "That it is desirable that there be established in Dunedin an auxiliary of the London Missionary i Society." . •:>:.;'-! The Rev. A. Blake seconded the motion, which was carried. The meeting closed with prayer. ' -
