The Riddler.

THE MATHEMATICAL AND RIDDLE PRIZE COMPETITIONS. Our issue of April 7, closed the six months during which answers were counted towards the Mathematical and Riddle Prizes offered in The Witness of October 7, 1876. Below we give the result. In this, as in most other things, a Urge number of competitors began well, but gradually dropped off ; others commenced when so much time had elapsed as to leave them no fair chance of obtaining a prize. It is our intention to organize a further series, arid we trust that there will be a good stand-up fight for the prizes offered. The prize of books, value £2 105., is awarded to S. Broad, Waiwera, as the solver of the greatest number of Witness Mathematical Questions during the last six months. His score is 48, while that of H. S., Kyeburn. is 37, and that of R. D., Valleyfield, 29: The Prize of Books, value £2 10s., offered to the person who should guess the greatest number of Riddles up to; the 7fch, April, is awarded to J. H. Schoen (v( v H. S.")V Kyeburn Diggings. He scores 113, the next on the list being Robert Dick ("R. D."), Valleyfield, Portobello, 108. W. C. X., Warepa, follows with 90 ; and the next is Fitzgerald 8., Kuri Bush, 72. ■
