OTAGO UNIVERSITY.

A meeting of the University Council was held on Tuesday. Present— The Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Rev. E» L. Stanford, Mr Fulton, Hon. W. H. Reynolds, Mr Justice Williams, Mr Macandrew, Dr Burns, and Mr Strode.

Applications were received for the use of the University Hall from the Horticultural Society, the Perth, Angus, and Mearns Association of Otago, and the Churchwardens of St. Peter's Church, Caversham, all of which were granted, subject to the usual conditions. The following resolutions were then adopted :—

Whereas it has been alleged that propo«a's are beiog made to the Senate of the University of New Zealand now in session at Nel=on to the effect that the existing standard of examination be lowered, this Council is of opinion that any such proposal, if given effect to, would be subversive of the objects for which the Univeraity was constituted (in respect of aiming at which it has received a Royal charter) and a direct breich of faith with the University of Otago, which agreed to sffiliate with the New Zealand University under the full confidence and express assurance that the present standard ahould be faithfully maintained. This Council therefore expresses its hope th«t the Senate of the University of Is'ew Zealand may withhold jts assent from any such proposal as aforesaid— at all

events, until the Council and Professorial Board of the University of Otago shall have had an opportunity of considering the same. Resolved that the Chancellor he requested to transmit a copy of this resolution to the Chancellor of the University of New Zealand. That the Registrar he authorised to advertise the University Buildings for sale or lease. That the site of the proposed new University Buildings, known as the Old Botanical Gardens, he fenced. That the representatives of the Press be admittjd to the meetings of this Council, excepting when in committee, with a view to reporting its proceedings.
