TRAMWAYS AS A SPECULATION. TO THE EDITOR.

, Sik — It has sometimes been urged by the opponents of tramways, as one of their pet arguments, that they do not pay, and iv consequence of this many Companies in the Home country and elsewhere have come to grief. Fiom the enclosed paragraph, which I have cut from the Glasgow Herald, of 24th July last, I think there can only be one opiniou on the subject — tuat some companies at least can make such enterprises pay. The paragraph reads as follows :—: —

" The accounts of the Dublin Tramway Company for the past half-year, subject to audit, show a balance available for division, of L11,G23. A dividend at the rate of 8 per cent, is recommended, which will absorb L 960 0; L 1750 will be carried to the reserve fund, which will stand at L 933 2; and the balance of L 273 will be carried forward."

When, it is taken into account that the profit shown is for only half a year, and. yields a dividend of 8 per cent., I should think, that even in thiß Colony, where we look for large returns, money need cot go a begginpr. While writing on this _ subject, I would just mention that it is my opinion, and that also of a large number of the residents north, of + he Octagon, and to the east of George street, that if the route which the City Council has decided upon is adhered to, the value of the Dunedin Tramways will be considerably lessened, by Berving8 erving the minority who- live along tho line of

George -street and the 'smaller "Balf of Great' King street, instead of , running through one of the more centrally situated streets', giving the large number of people resident towards the Bay some small chance of being accommodated. Moller's Cod Liver Oil. — " It is with great pleasure that I can bear testimony to the purity of Mr Moller's Cod Liver Oil,' l which I have used for some three years 'both in private practice and at the Home for Sick Children, Coatham. In comparing the oil supplied by Mr Moller with that used pre- ■ viously, I cannot but be struck with the few cases in which the stomach refuses, to • tolerate the oil — a great desideratum in an institution where so many cases of scrofula are admitted. I can confidently recommend Mr Moller's oil to the public as ,of exceptional purity, and of great dietetic value. Thomas W. T.
