CHESS.
With a view to encourage the cultivation of the Scotch Gambit among the junior members of the Chess Club, Mr A. F. Nixon, the winner of the first prize in the late Handicap tournament, has handed to the Treasurer of the Dun- 1 edin Chess Club the amount of his prize, to be divided between the two best players of the Scotch Gambit Chess opening. First and second-class players being excluded from the competition, an opportunity is afforded for some of the weaker players to distinguish themselves, and no doubt many of them will enter themselves as competitors. The three first moves in the Gambit are to be made by both players. The moves are : — 1. PtoK4 1. PtoK4 2. Kt to KB 3 2. KttoQß3 3. P to Q 4 This move constitutes_ the Scotch Gambit, which is so named from its having been adopted, many years ago, by the Edinburgh Chess Club, in a match by correspondence with the ' London Club. The usual reply for Black is— -3. P takes P. He can also play 3. Xt takes P.; but the former is considered the best move. The entries, confined to members of the Club, will close on Saturday evening next. The number of games to be played will depend upon the number of competitors. ' ■ Twenty-two competitors entered for a tourney in connection with the newly-formed Chess Club at InvercargilL The eleven victors who win in the first round are to play each one the other, [the winners of the largest number of games to take the prizes. Ten minutes is the maximum time allowed for any move.
