VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

The firing by the No. 1 City Guards for the Challenge Cup and Prize money, took place at the North Dunedin Range, on Saturday morning. Five of the Corps competed, Serjeant M'Gregor being in charge. The conditions were— Wimbledon target, standing at 200 yds., and any position the other ranges ; Cup to be won three times by the same person, and twice consecutively. The morning was dull, and the light unfavourable to accurate, scoring. Subjoined are the scores :—: —

Those who competed m the afternoon for this (the fhst match of the season) were at a great disadvantage, as during the whole time it rained, hailed, and blew bard. So bad was the

s

weather that it caused seven or eight of th» squad to retire, they not caring to lie down in the pools of water with which the ground was covered. Volunteer Wm. Webster holds the cup foi the next three months, with the excellent score of 63. It is probable that three of the prize-takers will be. disqualified through not having attended the requisite number of drills during the past two months. < The afternoon scoring was as follows :

A meeting of representatives of the Volunteer Companies was held in the Headquarters Drill Shed on the 19th inst., Major Stavely in the chair. The Chairman explained that he had called the representatives of the several Volunteer Companies in the DuDedin district together for the purpose of considering the advisability of meeting regularly and advising upon such measures connected-with the Volunteers as night from time to time be brought before them, and to keep watch over and assist in promoting Volunteer matters generally. The following representatives were duly ap. pointed:— No. 1 Company— Captain Wales, Lieutenant Douglas, and Sergeant M'Gregor. North Dunedin Rifles— Lieutenant Pell, Serfeant Cherrie, and Volunteer Allan. Naval irigade— Captain Smith, Petty Officer Jamieson, and Gunner Pratt, Wakari, South Dis« trict, and the Artillery were not represented. Lieutenants Douglas, Pell, and Grant were appointed a Range Committee. Lieutenant A. Grant was elected Secretary, and Capt. Wales Treasurer.

It was resolved, on the motion of Lieutenant Pell — " That the captains of companies wait on Mr Conyers, the General Manager of Railways, and ascertain what arrangements can be made for the conveyance of Volunteers by rail to Tokomairiro or any other place that may be decided upon, on the 9th November, and submit a report of their enquiries nt next meeting."

Captain Wales intimated that the Provincial Executive had agreed to give the Volunteers a title to the Drill Shed Reserve, in accordance with a resolution ef the Provincial Council, and also to vest the same in Trustees on behalf of the Volunteers. The necessary papers had been sent to Mr Donald Reid, M.H.R., with a request that he will be pleased to take steps to effect that object by introducing a Bill this session. It was resolved that the following mem6ml be senk to His Honour the Suj: erintendent im. mediately:-— " Dunedin, 20th Sept., 1876. " To James Macandrew, Esq., M.H R., , Wellington, "Sir— We, the undersigned, members of Dunedin Volunteers and others, would respectfully bespeak your interest in taking the necessary steps to complete the vesting of the Drill Shed Reserve in trustees. At the solicitation of the Dunedin Volunteers, the Provincial Executive have resolved— 'That the Drill Shed Reserve should be legally vested in the Volunteers.' The papers have been sent to Mr Donald Reid with a request that ho will take the necessary stepß to effect that object. But it is supposed that a difficulty will stand in the waj until section 10 has been Crown granted. If such is the case we would respectively solicit your interest to get the Crown grant issued, if possible, at once, and also that you would kindly lend your influence to the furtherance of the object, that the land referred to may b« legally vested in trustees by Bill this session.— [Here follow the signatures.]
