PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.

The regular weekly meetirg of the above Council was held on Monday evening. Present —His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Dodson,' M'Kinlay, Miller, Aaher, M'Grregor. The minutes having been disposed of, the following CORRESPONDENCE, was submitted to the meeting :—: — A letter from Mr R. Donald, requesting that in the event of the street in which his property is situated being formed, a retaining wall opposite hia section would be required. — Referred to the Works Committee. From Mr Hedger, requesting leave to erect a verandah opposite his shop in George street. — Granted, subject to usual conditions. From Mr Roberts, asking to be allowed to remain on the Town Belt, and offering L 4 per annum rent for the section. — It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Dodson, that the applicant be granted two months' time to remove. From Mr Bolton, explaining matters in connection with the crossing at his premises, and offering to repair the crossing to the satisfaction of the Inspector. — Offer accepted. , From Mr J. B. Taylor, requesting that instructions in writing be given to him respecting the crossing he was laying down opposite his premises in George street, and objecting to the constant interference of the workmen employed by the Inspector ot Works. — It was resolved that the matter be left with the Inspector of Works. , ( A letter from Captain Thomson, directing, the attention' of the Corporation to the fact, that the mums leading from the Water Works reservoir to the Port had been laid through his property without his consent first being asked.. He pointed out that the land was much depre-' ciated in value therefrom, and placed the value! of the compensation be demanded at LSOO. The' writer also asked to be informed what the Corporation purposed doing with his claims for compensation generally, and pointed out that if the case went to law, much additional ex- 1 pense would be entailed upon the ratepayers of! the Port. — It was resolved, on the motion of, Mr M'G-regor, seconded by Mr Kinlay, that' the letter be referred to the Water Works' Committee. REPORTS. After passing sundry accounts, the Finance : Committee reported, recommending that the' Town Clerk advise the solicitor to at once hand' over the Corporation town leases to the respective lessees on payment of Ll Is, and outlay. Also, that the Clerk furnish the solicitor with a list of all outstanding accounts for kerbing, with the view of immediate recovery, and that the Clerk be instructed to giva notice to ratepayers by advertisement touching overdue' rates. ; On the proposition of Mr Miller, seconded' by M/ Asher, the report was adopted. BATHS. Mr Asher laid a plan of the proposed publi (! baths on the table. — Ordered to lie there till next meeting. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of L 56 15s lid were passed for payment. MISCELLANEOUS. The Town Clerk submitted a return of rates levied in each ward last year, as follows :— ' High. Ward, L 368 8s 9d ; East Ward, L 179 2s 6d; Middle Ward, Lll6 11s 3d; South Ward, L 63 8s 9d. Total, L 727 11s 3d. Total value of rateable property, L 11,641. Au offer from Mr Maddigan to lease recreation ground, Town Belt, for grazing purposes, was declined, as being too little. Mr Graham wrote asking to be excused from i attending the meeting, as he was^ very unwell, and also requesting that the notice of motion standing in his name might .ie over until next meeting. Granted. It was a resolved that a fproper quantity of tools be provided for the use of the Corporation workmen. Mr Asher moved that the Inspector make a temporary footpath at Mrs Williams's section, No. 31, to allow parties living in that neighbourhood access to Kaio lane. Mr Dodson seconded. Carried. The question of the erection of a lamp opposite the Foresters' Hall was allowed to further lie over till next meeting.
