Hypatia (Roslyn) sends the following solution of problem 49. As the moves are forced, we arc surprised that this neat solution did not suggest itself to the composer, Mr S. H. Thomas, or the chess editor of Land and Water, from winch it was taken :—: — 1. Xt to X B 3 (eh) 1. X to X 5 (a) 2. Q takes KBP (eh) 2. X takes Xt (b) 3. Q to X Xt 4 mate (a) 1. X takes Xt or P 2. Q takes QBP mate (») 2. X to Q 6 3. Xt to Q Xt 4 mate.
