PUBLIC BETTING.

The authorities seem determined to put a stop to public betting in Melbourne. In the Argus of the 7th iu&t. we find the follow ing:— "As usual, the evening before the AJ.C. Metropolitan is run, the; c was a large gathering at the Prince of Wales Hotel list night. To the astonishment of every one, notices were posted up stated that betting was strictly prohibited in the hotel.
