PUBLIC BETTING.

The authorities seem determined to put a stop to public betting in Melbourne. In the Argus of the 7th iu&t. we find the follow ing:— "As usual, the evening before the AJ.C. Metropolitan is run, the; c was a large gathering at the Prince of Wales Hotel list night. To the astonishment of every one, notices were posted up stated that betting was strictly prohibited in the hotel. A number of policemt-n weie stationed about, evideutly with the intention of preventing any betting taking place. The members of the ring declined to do any business unless they were out of the sight and hearing of t' c constables."

Doxcaster.— The fourteen or fifteen thousand guineas paid by the Duke of Westminster for the Derby winner, Doncaster, .is the highest price (says the Australasian) ever given for a horse, and was the sensational item of turf news by j the last mail. Doncaster's turf career has indeed been a remarkable « no. He started a despised outsider for the Derby at 40 to 1, and within three short minutes he achieved the highest turf distinction there is— being bracketed with Ihe heroes of pasttimesj West Australian, Gladiateur, the Flying Dutchman, Favonis, &c. Derby.— The Leader says :— Mr W. C. Ynille reports having let the thoroughbred stallion Derby to Air B. Bailey, of Corop, where he will stand this season Derby has been down in New Zealand for some time past, and only arrived a week or two ago. He has grown into a nice little horse, and ought to get flyers, | as his breeding is first-class, being by Ferryman, out of Chrysolite. The Niggeb.— Mr W. C. Yuille reports having sold the thoroughbred colt The Nigger, by B? r'jarian, out of Vixen, &c. to Mr Telford, of New Zealand. The Nigger has grown into a line-looking horse, aDd will make a good sire for Maori land.
