AUSTRALIAN J. C. SPRING MEETING.

The Spring Meeting of the Australian Jockey Club was commenced on the Bandwick course on the 4th. The weather was fine, but with a cold wind, and there was a large attendance. The racing was very good, the principal event, the Derby, bringing out eleven starters. Tbe hurdle race, 2£ miles, was wen easily by Cronstadt; Gaffer Grey second, and Welshman third. Time, 5 mm. 27^ sec. Jjghe Marquis took the Trial Stakes, beating Barbara, Esmeralda, Gillie Calhim, and Miss Kingston. The Derby was a splendid contest, and only won just on the post by a bare half length by Richmond, the Valetta Colt being second, and Volenlia third. The time was very fa3t, 2 mm. 42V sec., the fastest yet recorded in the Colonies. The Spring Stakes al?o produced a capital race, between Kingsborough, Goldsborough, and Imperial, and they all finished very close up in the order named. The Epsom Handicap gave a victory to Mr. Tait with his mare Evangeltne. On the second day the weather was splendid and there was a large attendance. The first race of the day was a three quarter of a mile spin, which was won by Express, only half a length in ndvanc9 of the second horse. The Maiden Stakes gave a victory to Mr. Gardiner with his fine colt Bullion, which Mr. Dakin bought for him some time since; the Sylvia colt ran second, and Clifton third. Cyclopa, who was backed at even nvaicy, won the Ladies' Mile easily, and then came the great event of the day— the race for the Metropolitan. Latest betting :— 3 to 1 each against Ki'igßborough and Kingfisher, 10 to 1 each {sultan, Goldsborough, Sunbeam, and Eros. Sentinel and Ladybird were scratched shortly before the race. Kingfisher was the first to show in front with Sultan and Calumny, but at the trainers' stand Eros was leading, Kingfisher being second, Excelsior third, and Goldsborough fourth. Bounding the turn, King of the "West showed in front, but shortly after gave way to Kingfisher, and at the back of the course he was leading by a couple of lengths in front of King of the West ; Lurline, Eros, Excelsior, and Goldsborough following in order, the last-named on the inside and coining up fast. The same order was maintained to the bend, where Goldsborjugh had improved his position, and ran into the third place, but at the next turn he was second. A fine race then took place all along the straight, which resulted in Goldsborough getting in front, and winning by half a length in advance of Kingaborough, with Kingfisher third ; just behind them Lurline, Sultan, Calumny, King of the West, Llama, St. Heliera, and Sunbeam, in the order indicated.
