CHURCH OF ENGLAND DIOCESAN SYNOD.

The third annual session of the Synod of the Diocese of Dunedin was opened yesterday (St. Matthew's Day). The holy Communion was celebrated at St. Paul's Church in the morning, and in the eyening a full choral service took place at St. Matthew's Church. The Eev. E. G. Penny conducted the prayers, and several Psalms were chanted. The lessons were read by the Rev. Messrs Gifford and Granger. The choir, numbering 115, and representing the Diocesan Choral Union, beautifully rendered the anthem, which was taken from the 135 th Psalm, v. 5, 6, and 21. The junior choristers of St. Paul's, All Saints', and St. Matthew's Churches appeared in their surplices. Mr Richardson presided at the organ, and Mr A. J. Towsey was the choir-master. The handsome church was crowded, and the offertory (which was in aid of I its Building: Fund) Amounted to £26 5a lid.
