3 There was reason for believing that Captain Liernuf's plans would be reproduced in Engineering and Mr liruce waited for it, btiinif convinced that it would be a \ery convenient iurm for supplying information to you. As the repr iciu.-Uon bas not been effected. Mr Hruce haa proirureil, and caused to be copied the plans which were pr-ip s-ed to be used at Gla-^ow The copies are fonwrdeu to you by book post, to"eth«r with all the prmted documents mentioned in Mr Bruce s letters. 1. I also forward to you by book post, "The Sewa«-» Question," by F. C Krepp and the " Creatment and Utilisation of Sewage." by W. H. Corfield ; and I hopa to send by the next miil another *nd more recent work, which, in compliance with instructions, I am endeavouring to obtain. 5. I am to add that St Julius Vogel has been happy to do all that has beeu possible to comply with your request in this matter ; aud that he hopes the information obtained will be of v*lue to the City of Dunedm. He is sure that y*m and the Corporation will recognise and appreciate thu great assistauce given by Mr Bruce, and the Hberauty shown by that gentleman. Mr G. B. Bruce (Consulting Engineer in England for New Zealand) to Sir J. Vogel :— Sinco I had the pie usure of seeinsr you the other day, I have had a long interview with Mr Adam Scott who, I understand, has purchased from Captain Liernur his patent rights for his system of dealing with sewage in Great tiritain. Mr hcott showed me a variety of drawings, shewing the mode in which the s.i stem is carried out, and explained to me the exteat to which at present it has been adojjted. The system id extremely ingenious, and I am not prepared to say that, under some circumstances and in some localities it might not oe a reasonable buccess. fc is at present at work, to a small extent, in two or three towns on the Continent, principally in Holland It has also been examined ou the spot by the authorities of the town of Southporfc, in Lancashire with a view of their deciding us to its fitness of appli! cation to that town. I h.ive had the advantage ot reading the report which w.is made on that occasion to the Town Council of douthport. I& appears that the total cos>t of the construction of the closets and drams, and 3tsam engines, comes to about £22 per house, under ordinary circumstances and thi3 does not include any ordinary sewers for cai! r.ving off the ram water and house refuse, other th&n that from the water-closet. My opinion is that the system is too untried to justify anyone in recommending its adoption in a Coiony like New Zealand. At the same time, if you desire it, I shall be glad to get tracings made, illustrative of the working of the vyatein, and the apparatus employed, with a description of itg mode of action Tne Engineers on the spot, knowing exactly tha locality and the position ot things, would be able to judce of its application to the local circumstances. Mr Bruce to Sir J. Vogel : — De*r Sir -Following up my previoua letters, I have now the pleasure of handing to you four drawings illustrative of the Liernur system of drainage. Thesa are copies of what was proposed by Captain Liernur to be used in Glasgow, vvith the aid of these drawings and the specification of the patent, together with the reports and documents which are al=io now enclosed the t'ngineera at Dunedin will be able for themselves to understand what the system is, and to see how far it may be applicable to the circumstances of that city The following is a list o£ the plans and documents sont hemwith :— Plan No. 3205, section of house, shewing the Liernur arransements.
