The third annual show of the Dunedin Canary and Poultry Association was duly opened yesterday afternoon, at the Headquarters Drill Shed. The weather, which tor this time of year has been remarkably fine for a lengthened period, was very favourable. Though the Judges had much difficulty in deciding upon the merits of numerous exhibits, their labours were completed before the hour advertised for admitting the general public. That they gave almost universal satisfaction is evidenced by the fact that only two protests were entered, one being handed in after the time allotted.

THE FORMAL OPENING.

Shortly after two o'clock, His Worship the Mayor of Dunedin, accompanied by the Mayoress and several officers of the Association, formally opeued the Show. About 80 visitors were then present. His Worship said it afforded him the greatest pleasure to attend on this occasion to open the third Annual Show of the Duaedin Canary and Poultry Association. Last year His Honour the Superintendent had stated that the portion of domestic economy comprised in poultry and dairy produce had been very much neglected, but from what he (the Mayor) had seen during the past few days, more especially at the Clutha, the people of Dunedin fully appreciated this important industry. He thought the exhibit'on of to-day would compare very favourably with similar exhibitions m the Colony of New Zealand. He had learned from the Secretary that special mention was made of some pigeons exhibited by Mr James Park, and the Juuges thought the Barbs so admirable to look at that they ought to be put in a glass case. He (the Mayor) found that Mr Curie, a gentleman who had displayed very great interest in this Association, had taken the first prize for canaries, Mr Park for pigeons, and Mr Harper, of Fleet street, for poultry. H e had no doubt that a very large number of exhibits would 'have been sent from the Clutha and other inland townships had the Show been arranged a week later this season. However, they might confidently anticipate that Balclutha would be well represented next year. This not being a subject that he need enlarge upon, he would now declare the Show open for exhibition. — (Applause.)

Three hearty cheers were then given for His Worship the Mayor, and a similar compliment was demanded and lustily responded to for " the Lady Mayoress."

THE EXHIBITS.

The total number of ectries for competition is 299 as against 463 last September, when, however, many exhibits were not shown, owing to the non-arrival of the barque Glencoe from Hobart Town. The principal awards, omitting the special prizes, were : — First prize, £1 ; second, 10s ; third, honorary certificate. Mr R. Hay secured the first and second honours for adult dark Brahmas, and Mr James Knox followed suit for the youngsters. However, some of these magnificent birds were entered for exhibition only by Mr Taggart, who would probably have taken the chief prize had he not been debarred, as a Judge, from competing. The Light Brahmas, Dorkings, Black Spanish, and Cochins, were of splendid quality. In Game, the prize for adult Black-breasted and other Beds (in which class the celebrated dispute occurred last September) went to Mr James Wheatley, the second honours being secured by Mr Thomas George, who also carried off the first prize for the youngsters. George's adult birds were imported by Mr J. Snow, of Mosgiel, who has been a painstaking and successful breeder. The game duck-wings, bantams, Polands, and silver- spangled Hamburgs would do credit to any exhibition. Mr Curie's Houdans were disqualified on account of their red feathers. For the heaviest and fattest pen of fowls, Mr Harper richly merited his tirsfc prize, though there was only one entry, and his white swans attracted much attention; The merits of the various pigeons were freely discussed, Mr Curie's barbs receiving the highest encomimns. This gentleman was awarded the first prize for his Belgian cock canary, Mr Dermer taking second honours. The judges in this class occupied about two hours' in couidering the merits of the above exhibits,'

and finally were compelled to obtain the assistance of a referee. Mr Dermer entered a protest, but the Committee sustained the decision of the judges. This year we miss a well-known and enthusiastic bird-fancier, Mr J. Alberte, whoexhibitedsomesweetsongsters and took numerous prizes at the second Show. A beautiful blackbird, shown by Mr Sydney James, was awarded first honours. The conversational aud musical powers of the African and Rosella parrots afforded much amusement, as did also the chattering of the magpies. Mr Curie was the only exhibitor of breeding cages. The dairy produce had a very tempting appearance. Though there were eight entries for trussed poultry, the judges apparently did not deem it prudent to even give a honorary certificate to any exhibitor in this class. We trust the Committee will encourage these exhibitions by awarding at least one special prize to the mo3t worthy. Mr W. Irvine took first honours for the best basket of hen eggs, which were real beauties, and Mr Curie wa3 the successful exhibitor of duck eggs. The first prizes for fresh and powdered butter were secured by Mr A. Stewart. We must compliment Miss Ooig, of Green Island, upon her splendid dish of fancy butter. The des ; gn was that of a large swan, surrounded by numerous and pretty rolls. Messrs D. Mason and James Irvine were the principal prize-takers for Colonial ham and bacou. For ihe best roll of Colonial bacon no prize was awarded, though there were four entries. Mr Irvine's cheese was of excellent quality. Amongst the extras we noticed Mr Hooper's beautiful Polands, and three swans reoently imported. THE JUDGES. The following gentlemen hindly officated as Judges : — Game and Game Bantams : Messrs A. L. Fisher, J. R. Morris, and J. Arming. Other Poultry : Messrs W. H. Taggarfc, H. M'Leod, and J. J. Douglaa. Pigeons : Messrs Pearfc, Dacombe, and Godfrey. Canaries and other -Cage Birds : Messrs Bills, Houston, Pirie, and Swan. Rabbits: Mr C. Bills. Trussed Poultry: Mr T. Hetherington. Dairy Produce : Messrs Wright, Mercer, and Durie. » THE ATTENDANCE AND THE ART UNION. It is estimated that about 850 persons attended the Show yesterday, the amount taken at the doors being £30. The Drill Shed was brilliantly lighted last evening, when the Drum and Fife Band mustered and played Beveral lively piecesjn close proximity to the feathered tribes. Invitations have been given to the children of the Benevolent Institution and Industrial School to attend the show, but, in consequence of Saturday being their busiest time, they cannot take advantage thereof. Should the weather con ,tinue fine, the Show will doubtless be well patronised to-doy. An art union of poultry, pigeons, canaries, &c, will he held in connection with the Show, and each member op person paying for admission will be entitled to a ticket. THE PRIZE LIST.
