THE INDUSTRIAL SCHQOL.

Various improvements have recently been effected' in connection with the Industrial School. Besides a new kitchen and wash* house provided with every convenience, the children's dining-room has been extended. The new school-house ocenpies a prominent part of the playground, and ig lofty and well ventilated. Its length, without reckoning the porch, is 22ft., and ita breadth 26ft. A small portion of the room has been partitioned, off .principally for the schoolmaster's benefit. The main building has received a coat of paint, and several outhouses have been erected. Mr John Somerville, the Provincial Government Inspector, supervised the general improvements, which are considered very satisfactory. Additional accommodation is much required, it being impossible to classify the children at present. There are now in the Industrial School 84 boys and 74 girls, making altogether 158. Since the commencement of the year the Eoman Catholic clergy have paid the Institution 28 visits ; Church of England, 4 ; Presbyterian, 2 ; Primitive Methodist, 1 ; Mr Isaac Zacariah (Rabbi), 1 ; Mr J. A. Torrance (Gaol chaplain), 1. The Ch-arch of England and Presbyterian children attend weekly service at Caversham. On the 18fch June Bishop Mbran "examined the children in the Christian doctrine and found them very well instructed indeed." He was "also very much pleased with the appearance of the children, who appeared to be in good health and to have been cared for in everyway." His Honour Chief Justice Prendergast, in April last, recorded his "testimony to the extraordinary cleanliness and order observable throughout the Institution." The Superintendent haa also displayed great interest in the School. '
