Timaku, August 30th. Sir John Cooky's report recommends the Construction of a breakwater at Timaru, to cost £240,000, and the subsequent construction of a jetty at a cost of £71>,000. It gives great satisfaction here.

Invkrcaruill, August 20th. A meeting, convened by the Mayor, to consider the question of abolition, ( was held last night, when a resolution, in ' favour of referring the question to the constituencies! wus curried by a Bmall majority. The meeting was rather rowdy towards its conclusion. The irrepressible Jock Graham was present, occupying the time of the meeting and speaking on abolition.

August 30fch. Another section of the Main Irunk Line, eight miles between Mataura Bridge and Gore, was formally opened to-day. No general invitation was issued to the public Mr W. Brunton, C.E., was present on be. half of the Government, and Mr Topham represented the contractors, Brogden and Sons. The day was fine, and everything came off smoethly and quietly. The rail* way bridge at Gore was .tested for the first time with engines and ballast waggons, weighing in all about 65 tons. Mr Brunton expressed himself satisfied. Coming home in the special the distance from Gore to Invercargill, 40 miles, was done easily in an hour and a-half.
