NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

The following is from the Sunday Newsman published at Sydney :— " Commodore Goodenough, you are a very big bug indeed. Queen Victoria is godmother to your wife and you are related, we believe, to some of / the first families of England. Still, for all that, and notwithstanding that you hold a commission from Her Majesty, and wear a cocked hat, and gold swabs upon your shoulders, it seems to us you are an undiluted snob. This is the letter, sir, you sent to a lady, in answer to a request for your patronage : — ' Commodore Goodenough acknowledges the receipt of Mrs Hoskins's note of Ist December, and he regrets that he is unable to promise the patronage of himself and officers at the benefit on Friday evening. Neither Commodore Goodenough nor the officers feel called upon to do so, as they rarely, if ever, visit the Victoria Theatre H.M.S Pearl, 4th December, 1874."— N0, sir, you don't go to the Victoria, because you are so much wrapped up in making a little spurious reputation by getting up Utopian schemes of needless charities for your own glorification. You wanted, Commodore, to shift the Australian Station from this port to Auckland, and yon got into the Council oi the Legislature of New Zealand, and was ordered out by your superiors for you have superiors, you know, Goodenough. We should like to see the naval station shifted, gallant tar, if you were always to be boss of it ; but you are not, Goody. No ! you will be recalled some day, and the people of Australia will hail your departure with pleasure. Cut this out, brave Goodenough, put it in your scrap book, and show the people in England how independent papers in Australia treat snobs, even if they are high born, and hold proud positions. Ta, ta, great rover of the main."
