CROMWELL.

(FEOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

The proclamation of cancellation of part of Loughnan's run has, as might be expected, caused a rush for agricultural leases thereon, and objections are lodged by some cattle owners and miners against the issue of leases, on the plea that the ground is auriferous ; but, really, with the object of preserving the common intact for grazmg purposes. The once magnificent Aurora Company passed through its last stage of real existence yesterday, when M) Fache sold, under the hammer, the plant and race for the sum of £955 to Mi 1 Thomas Logan. Sic transit yloria mundi. ■ No one doubts the value of the property in the hands of the new propt ietor. The Bendigo Deep Tunnel Co.'s shares have risen and fallen most violently since its formation. The first week of its existence 500 per cent was paid for shares in it ; now, par is with difficulty obtainable, the probable necessity for patching up its honour by recourse to Law Courts in vindication of its acts, has had a most depressing effect. Our Mayor is determined to leave nothing undone to restore to Cromwell her former reputation for health. That nasty word, "dirty " little Cromwell, has justly aroused his ire, and he wishes to prove by acts, not words, that the term is a reproach and an untruth. He propoßes frequent visits of inspection by the Board of Health, and the continuation of the employment of a Corporation scavenger. He is not deterred by the expense — said to be the whole of the rates ; and he truly sayß if we are to remove the unfavourable impression, we must noc only make the town clean, but keep it so. The block IX. question, after one or two opiates, again slumbers, and ■will probably not be disturbed until the next election as usual. Blank forms of Waterworks Debentures are being exhibited in the window of the Town Clerk's office, I suppose, to remind purchasers that the Council is open to borrow. The Jockey Club have had some difficulty in procuring a purchaser for the booth and stand at the forthcoming race meeting. (Those Good Templars must be at the bottom of it.) Mr Dagg has at length accepted the lot for £100. There is really nothing of interest to report from this district. Sports are the order of the day, and with such Queen's weather as we at present enjoy, there is nothing to mar the pleasures of the Christ* mas season.— A fatal accident occurred on the 24th wot,, in th<p locality of Edward*

with two horses over the baak of the Kawarau, at a spot where the road is rather narrow. It is stated that the unfortunate driver (J. Hayes) had charge of the dray, containing, amongst other goods, a cask of ale, and the horses jibbed at a small hill, and ultimately backed over the bank. The man was crushed in the fall, and only survived a few hours. The dray was lost m the river, and the horses must have torn themselves free from the falling load, as they were found uninjured. — The Star of the East Company brought in an excellent cake of 278 ounces from 204 tons of stone — doubtless a very acceptable Christmas present for the shareholders. The Cromwell Company has also just completed a crushing — cut short of ita usual dimensions by the Christinas holidays — nevertheless the yield for the short time of crushing (about 10 days) is 850 ounces, or thereby. These excellent results have imparted a confident feeling in the district, which it is gratifying to witness. "
