The R.MS.S. Mikado arrived at Port Chalmers at a late hour last evening, and by her we are in possession of later English news. We extract the following from files of the Sydney Morning Herald to hand :—: — London, January 3 1st. The stock markets are dull. The wool sales have been postponed until the 17th, in consequence of the elections.

Tho copper market is depressed, with few transactions. The present cash quotations for Australian copper are £91 to £92.

The tin market is heavy and unsettled, with receding quotations. Straits tin is now quoted at £115; Australian at £113. Flax is lower.

Tho price o wheat is drooping, owing to large expected arrivals. America has shipped half a million quarters during the past three weeks. Adelaide wheat, however, is still in good demand. The Conservative candidates are opposing the re-election of the Right Hon. W. E, Gladstone for Greenwich.

The pollings at the elections ■will be general next week. The former members for Birmingham, tho Right Hon. John Bright, P. H. Muntz, and George Dixon, have been re-elected unopposed. The Dutch forces have captured Kratou. The Carlists continue the blockade of Bilbao.

February Ist. General Wolseley and the British forces under his ct-mmand reached the River Prah on the Ist January. About an hour after his arrival he was met by ambassadors from the King of Ashantee, bearing letters asking for peace. Sir Garnet Wolseley replied that he would only treat with the King himself at Coomassie, whereupon the ambassadors returned. The fifth Naval Brigade crossed the Prah on the sth of last month.

Up to Saturday last 48 members have been elected. Of these, 20 are Liberals, and 28 Conservatives. Eight Liberals have been ousted by Conservative candidates. General Gablentz has committed suicide.
