Markets.

Witness Orncs, Thursday Morning. So far, tho business of the month has been fair. The s.ile of sugar ex Otago, by auction, took placs hist week. The sale of another cargo is advertised for Friday. At the former there was a full attendance of tho trade, when, contrary to expectation, the run was entirely on whites, the yellows and browns being altogether neglected, and the result that the whole of the whites, amounting to about 1000 bags, were sold at well-maintained prices, while the yellows had to be bought in. Tho following were the prices realised; -Snowdrop crystals, £38 7s 6d ; finest white crystals. £30 to £37 15s ; fine white crystals, £34 17s 6d to £35 2s Od, all in bond. In tea, we notice that the importers, Messrs AY". and G-. Turnbull and Co., intend losing no time in laying before buyers the nicely- assorted cargo of the Carl, from Foo-Chow. This will be done by auction on Thursday, at Messrs M'Landress's rooms. Sales of general groceries and oilmen's stores have been active during tbe week, but the pressure of well (in some items rather over) supplied stocks, is affecting prices, pushed already beyond the narrow margin which these goods leave at the best. The market for dairy produce is far from satisfactory. Old butter is very dull, and samples of new are not such as to command the market. A better quality should be produced by our farmers, whose interpst and aim it certainly ought to be to shut out the frequent importations which wo have from Wellington and Canterbu y. Cheese of last season is unsileable, and of the new only some few parcels have yet come to hand, the quality of .which can by no means bo pronounced prime. Prices are with difficulty maintained. In malt stocks remain heavy, with no prospect of their bemt; reduced until brewers have used up supplies which they have individually on hand. Fencing wire is in demand, at slightly improved i.ates. No ois enquired for, but not to be»ot. Slates are in^uflicientstook. The market is over-stocked with Baltic timber ; one firm holds 800,000 feet or the equivalentv alent of tw o cargoes. American lumber is also in over-stock, sales very limited, Co'onial timber having laruely taken the place of imported foreign. Flour is dull, at last quotations— the trade well supplied. Shipments for Great Britain arc going forward. Wheat is quoted at 4s (id for prime milling samples; second qualities arc unsaleable. Shipping is likewise going forward in v\ heat, considerable quantities coming in this week for that purpjsc from Oamaru. Oats arc quoted .at from 3s lOd to 4s tor old.
