Markets.

Witness Orvicr, Thursday Morning.

Business has been fairly biisk since our last— the first week in which wo seem to have got over the effects of tho holidays. In win% tho demand is vory limited, although one firm reports a good business done in ports and sherries. Th's is probably, we think exceptional. In the higher descriptions, such as moselle and champagne, some little spirit was latnly experienced— the consequence of our late fes tivities. Rum rpmains quiet. In brandy, there has been no special moyempnfc, but prices are maintained. At tho first sale by auction vi good? saved frpm tho Surat, 241 caseß of Hcnnes^''s brought 2fs 9d, unaer bond. In sugar, a good deal of business has been done privately : but tho cargo of the Parninghmn, from JDiuritius, offered at auction by Meters M'LanrtrtS3, Hoobnrn, and Co. on Friday, failed to elicit a single bid. This rare and anomalous (icouitcik'o was rendered all tho nioro incxplictiiAa that the importer* announced it as thoir inteiiUou »'<.<> .sell," and give delivery from the rail wiv' tlied'. letter has slightly bettered in price, and wo should' ijult fro tfjminhcd to find a continuous improvement for a time. Viu-e^i \j CNToedmyly dull. For hams unit bacon (iin)jortod) there i» at i,Hvont a very limited enquiry. Kerosene remains dull, nncl can hardly fail to bo othorwlso for tho remainder of tho summer. There has boon enquiry for corn, backs, but no sales that wo hear of ; the tendency id upward*, but tyrgo stocks operate depreptaffty.

Woolpacks are out of sea-on and neglected. New season s hops are taken up in small quantities by thebrewers, and only to serve as samples. Sales of malt are being made, but stocks are heavy, and brewers well supplied. In dned fruits, the lately increased demand has ceased, and the market is dull. The quotations fnr flour are without alteration. ~We notice a new feature lor this market in reference to flour. It is being shipped per Zealandia for England. We wish the shippers every success in this experiment, the first of the kind that has benn undertaken from this port, and t ust it may lead to more extensive ventures. Good samples ot wheat are scarce, and 5s per bushel can with difficulty be obtained. A quantity of this is also taken by the Zealandia. Oats are worth, for feed, about 4s ; milling, 4s 3d. The crops are repotted as giving good promise, and should warm seasonable weather succeed to the cold and wet of ti e last few days, and, most essential of all, if labour can be procured, we may expect an early and favourable harvest.
