Witness Offkjf, Thursday Moniinar. Nothing particular marks our having entered upon the business of another year. While some houses complain of things having been quiet, on the whole the transactions effected have been numerous. Sugar is going steadily into consumption at sustained rates, yellows being nearly sold out of first hands ; and stocks of teas are being considerably reduced at satisfactory prices. Bottled ale is all but absolutely out of the market, some few parcels arriving,' but none of any consequence. Geneva, imported, is dull, the New Zealand Distillery fast obtaining the monopoly of this article in the market. In -whisky, of the favourite brands, some trade sales have been effected, and this is all that can be expected at this distance from winter : the distillation of lower and medium kinds being nearly entirely supplanted by the local production. In brandy tnero is no speculation, but no decline, latest quotations being well maintained. Kerosene continues very depressed, [quotations do not exceed Is f)d, I.B. ; stocks very large. Hops of 1873 arrive but in limited shipments— they may be quoted us worth 2s 4d. Malt, continues dull, brewers having been themselves importers to some extent In galvanised iron stocks are heavy, prices ruling at iron) £30 to £38, according to brand. In fencing wire, there continues j "•ood enquiry for special numbers, and stocks light. Oilmen s stores are in fair and regular demand, and prices satisfactory • stocks are not a glut, only fuller than they were and fairly balanced to the ordinary rate of consumption Flour is still quoted at £11 15s and £12 os, with v, fair bakers" business doing.
