DUNEDIN POST OFFICE RETURNS.
The Chief Postmaster has kindly furnished us with the following returns, which may be of interest : — The number of letters received from and despatched to the United Kingdom, during the year 1873, was J60,1'24; newspapers, 822,109. Letters received and despatched to the Australian Colonies, 91,529 ; newspapers, 1015.534. For foreign countries— letters 11,313 ; newspapers, 7230. Interprovincial—Letters, 332,056 ; newspapers, 255,856. To Offices within the ProvinceLetters, 102.89S ; newspapers, 757,027. The local correspondence, or that posted for delivery in Dunedin, was— Letters, 159,111 ; newspapers, 48,270. The gross total for despatch and delivery during 1873 was — Letters, ], 783,714; newspapers, 1,494,026— as against 1872—1,526,273 letters, 1,242,765 newspapers ; or an increase of 257,441 letters, 251,261 newspapers. The District Post ! Offices established during the past year were — Gibbston (re-opened), Beaconsfield, Fortrose, Pembroke, Rough .Ridge, Serpentine, TVoodside, and Greytown (re-opened) — making the total number of Post Offices in Otago 136.
