LAWRENOE.
Laßt week Mr Clapoott delivered an interesting lecture on Life Assurance, and after the lecture gave »ome very good readings, whioh were highly amusing and seemed to take very well with the assemblage. Mr Clapcott will no doubt obtain a number of propositions for insurance from this quarter. His Excellency the Governor arrived here yesterday afternoon (12th) about half -past five o'clock, having driven from Tokomairiro in the short space of 2£ hours. It had been resolved by the Town Council that no public demonstration should be made on the occasion, but the Mayor and Councillors, with several inhabitants, went on the road to Havelock to accompany the carriage on its way hither. As soon aa the arrival took place the brass band played the National Anthem, and the Mayor and Councillors read the address of congratulation to His Excellency. Shortly after this the Athenaeum was visited by the Governor and Aide-de-Camp, in company with Mr J. 0. Brown, M.H.R., and afterwards they visited the Hospital and Gaol. To-day a visit was paid to the Blue Spur, and the party returned about noon and left on their journey about an hour thereafter.
