OREPUKI.
The holidays are over now, but dry weather still continues, which prevents miners going on full time. We held our Caledonian sports on New Year's Day, as well as other communities, and spectators declare that oura were far superior to the Riverton sports on Boxing Day, and by all I can hear I think they were. About £40 was distributed as prize money for running, jumping, vaulting, quoits, &c. The wrestling (Cumberland style) wafc particularly good and well contested, loud cheering being all the go, when, after a tough struggle, J. Turnbull succeeded in throwing R. Riddell. We also had, by way of a change, women's and girk' races. Altogether, a very pleasant day waa spent, considering our isolated posi-
tion, and the Committee deserve every credit for the able manner in which the sports were conducted. A few Christmas washings have turned out excellent. One party, report says, has washed up over 3500z., while others have been nearly as lucky. We are in hopes of a visit from Major Gordon to inspect our newly formed corps. Captain Hirst, Lieutenant Watson, and our Drill-iastructor, Mr T. H. Escott, have gone to Riverton to meet him. It might expedite the tramway were a few Government officials to take a "pleasure" trip up here, on foot, along the apology for a road.
